Kids Share Ideas for Healthier Foods

LISTEN (3 Minutes)

KGNU has spent the last few months working on a special nutrition project with 5th graders at Ashley Elementary School in Denver.  Along the way, we’ve had a lot of conversations with these young people about eating healthy– and the CHALLENGES to eating healthy. We talked about about how fresh fruit and vegetables can sometimes be expensive, and how there aren’t always enough stores in the neighborhood that sell fresh food.  We asked students to brainstorm some SOLUTIONS to these problems, and they came up with some BOLD and CREATIVE ideas. Let’s listen in!  (Produced by Sarah Hughes)

Hi my name is Guadalupe and I am a 5th grader at Ashley Elementary and this is my way I would make people eat healthier. There will be ten healthy stores that only sell healthy food in each city. The stores must be as big as Wal-Mart. Inside those stores, there will only be fresh vegetables and fresh fruit and the name of the store would be Health-Mart.

My name is Tatiana and I’m in 3rd grade at Ashley Elementary. This is my idea for how to help people eat healthy. I would make a healthy bus that would only run for stores that only has healthy food and not junk food in it. This bus would run Monday through Sundays, so that people could healthy food for their bodies.

My name is Zen and I am in the 3rd grade at Ashley Elementary and this is my idea for how to make the world eat healthier. I would have fruit carriers that carry baskets around giving people food, like to poor people, giving fruit to them.

My name is James and I’m a 5th grader and I’m ten and I’m at Ashley Elementary. You know how like people don’t really buy high organic foods– well, we could lower the prices of those types of organic foods and higher candies and chocolate and higher…you know, make them more expensive.

If I was powerful like the President I would tell the people to please make a vegetable garden in their yards, put vegetables like broccoli, corn, onion and a lot more vegetables, so please make a garden in your backyard.

Hi, I’m Ja’leah and I’m a 5th grader at Ashley Elementary and this is how I would help people eat healthier. I would get a factory– because a lot of people like to eat Hot Cheetos– so I would make a factory, I would make people put carrots and broccoli and stuff inside the Hot Cheetos but the Hot Cheetos would taste the same, and some kids wouldn’t even notice.

I’m Neeilah and I’m in the 5th grade and my idea for how to make people healthy is to ban Cheetos, ban cheetos, taquis and I think we should stop it because we can live a longer, healthier life.

My name is Jennifer I am a 5th grader at Ashley Elementary. My idea is to put healthy food on commercials. And those commercials will say that what you been missing about healthy food and why it’s good for your body. There will be commercials about apples, bananas, strawberries, zuchini, carrots, celery and broccoli…

My name is Robert and I’m in the 5th grade at Ashley Elementary and this is my idea for how to get people healthy– to put, to wrap up vegetables inside candy bars. We should also put vegetable words inside the Pledge of Allegiance. And it sounds like this, I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of Vegetables, and to the broccoli for which it stands, one nation, indivisible with liberty and broccoli for all.
